Who does/n't survive the climb to the top of Mount Everest (Age/Gender)?
For the period of 1995-2005 climbers range from 15-69 years old (figure B) although 50% of the climbers were aged between 31 and 48 years old. Chance of summiting (completing full climb) didn’t change greatly until approximately 50 years of age where it greatly decreased. The chance of death increased dramatically in this age period (60-70). Obviously the age of the climber will impact their chances of survival due to ability and as people become older they generally are physically less capable say to someone who is in their prime (30 years of age).
Men still outnumber women in climbing Mount Everest, but women are increasing in proportion (and constituted approximately 10% of all climbers between 2000 and 2000). Men are most likely to endure in Mount Everest due to their physical capability and strength to withstand harsher weather conditions, although in saying this the odds show women are able to endure in this Extreme tourist destination. Even though the ratio of men to women is outnumbered this result doesn’t contribute to the death rate or summit rate as it is generally equally panned out.

What is a Sherpa?
Sherpa vs Climbers Summits
Overall 248 people (161 westerners and 87 Sherpa’s) have died on the climb to Mount Everest from 1921 to 2013. Since 1990, the deaths as a percentage of summits have dropped to 3.6% due to better gear, weather forecasting and more people climbing with commercial operations. Although deaths have increased as a whole due to the dramatic increase in the number of people climbing Mount Everest. In 2013 it is around equal number of summits from Members vs Sherpa’s.
